How to Avoid Mistakes on Home Insurance Claims

If you’ve ever filed an insurance claim, you’ll understand the complexities involved. It’s easy to make mistakes or overlook details when putting in your claim, increasing the chances of it being denied by your insurance provider.  Here are some tips as to how to increase the chances of your claim being approved, and how to avoid making the most common mistakes.

Not being familiar with the small print

Before you even call your insurance company about a claim, it’s important that you’ve read your policy in its entirety, including the exceptions and small print. When you are familiar with the ins and outs of your insurance and what is covered, you will find it easier to communicate your claim to the agent.

Overlooking property maintenance

Some insurance companies will not pay for damage that occurred due to poor property maintenance. Make sure your roof, windows, and doors are in good condition and free of cracks or holes. This also includes maintaining gutters and drainpipes, fixing leaky pipes, and repairing any damage to your roof before it causes further problems.

Not having the right coverage

When it comes to home insurance, having the wrong coverage—or not enough coverage—can be a costly mistake. To prevent your family from being left vulnerable in case of disaster, it’s important that you have sufficient home insurance. Your intermediary can explain how different types of policies work and which one is right for you.

Cleaning up too fast

Some claims are refused or underpaid because there is no evidence, or reduced evidence, of damage or loss. This is usually when there has been an event such as a fire or flood, and the area is cleaned up before damage is documented. It’s useful to have before and after photographs, as well as keeping (rather than throwing away) damaged items. It’s crucial to keep a paper trail throughout your claim, which will involve safely storing receipts and other documentation of repair estimates etc.
