That age-old question: to cover or not to cover? Taking out home contents insurance may seem like an unnecessary expense, but with policies starting at just a few pounds a week, it’s definitely a worthwhile investment. Read on to find out five reasons why taking out a home insurance policy is a great way to protect your valuable possessions.
Accidents
Accidents: everyone has them! A tin of paint knocked over on a carpet or a child spilling a drink over your laptop are just two examples of common incidents that occur in the home. A home insurance policy with accidental damage cover ensures that, should an accident occur, your damaged item(s) will be replaced. But read your policy wording to check you are covered for accidental damage; some basic policies don’t have this as standard.
Fire
A fire in your home is a horrific event, made even worse by loss or damage to your belongings. Protect yourself against the added stress and upset of being unable to replace your valuables by getting the right policy for your home contents. Make sure you regularly check that your sum insured figure is adequate to cover you in the unfortunate event that you have to replace all contents in your home.
Theft/burglary
It’s everyone’s nightmare; returning home to find that your home has been broken into and items stolen. A home insurance policy removes a little of the stress from the event by paying out for any items taken so you can replace them. Do make sure to check that your policy names high-value items.
Loss/theft of items outside the home
Contents insurance can also separately cover items you take outside the home, such as jewellery, bicycles, laptops and mobile phones. Imagine leaving your expensive laptop in a café and having to pay to replace it – the correct policy will take some of the horror away from this situation. Again, make sure you check that you are covered for any items you are taking out of your home; some will have to be named on the policy in order to be covered.
Freezer contents
Even the dreaded spontaneous defrosting of the freezer can be covered on your contents insurance! No need to cry over defrosted milk; balance up the cost of claiming against your excess and you’ll be restocking in no time.
